Early Internationalization of Sport

The international spread of sport began alongside colonial expansion and global trade networks. Sports such as football, cricket, and rugby were introduced to various regions through imperial influence, educational institutions, and military presence.

While these sports were initially associated with colonial power structures, local populations adapted and transformed them, embedding erotic new cultural meanings and identities. This early phase laid the groundwork for sport as a shared global language.
